USING COUNSELLING TO IMPROVE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS OF THE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE EDUCATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION, WINNEBA
academic achievement of graduands of the College of Agriculture Education of the
University of Education, Winneba (UEW). In view of this, graduate statistics from 2010
to 2013 for the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education and Integrated Science
Education were collated and analysed using descriptive statistics. Besides this approach,
the student counselling system in the College was observed over the same period on how
it is conducted. In doing this, a literature search on students’ academic success measures
were equally done to compare with the students’ counselling system used at the College.
It was found that most students did not know their academic counsellors; there were too
many students to one counsellor; counsellors did not have adequate space for counselling
because most of them did not have offices of their own. These were found to impact
negatively on students’ counselling; hence, the final output of graduands from the College
was not appreciable when compared to other programmes run in UEW. Based on these
findings and taking cue from available literature on students’ counselling and academic
success strategies, some recommendations were made for remedial action to be taken by
the University to stem the tide. Consequently, it was recommended that senior members
(non-teaching) should be given the responsibility to counsel students so as to reduce the
counsellor-counsellee ratio. Also, it was recommended that counsellors must be
requested to make schedule for meeting their counsellees and this was going to be
possible if a place was designated for students’ counselling instead of the use of
lecturers’ offices. It is believed that if the recommendations are considered students
counselling would improve and that would go a long way to impact on the final output of
students in the College.
